Late last week the Wall Street Jounal’s AllThingsD D8 conference posted the entire Steve jobs interview they did with the Apple CEO. You might recall I noted some excerpts from this conference in my blog post titled ‘Disney, the iPad and Consumption’.
In particular I shared my thoughts on Jeffrey Katzenberg’s interview and the realization that NONE of the Dreamworks Animation ‘content’ can be had online, ANYWHERE, in ANY FORM. A HUGE contrast to the Disney companies recent, and relentless, push into the technological 21st century. And a huge contract to Apple’s current ‘consumption’ based product line (iPod’s, iPads, and iTunes stores galore).
You can see Disney’s push into media all over the place in it’s media properties. The most recent example being ‘Alice in Wonderland’ which opened on 10ish weeks ago (March 5th or so) and is, some what controversially, now already available at Redbox, DirectTV On Demand, Target (and other big box and online retailers) and of course all the Apple favorites as well.
So the interesting quote from Steve is down in the Q&A session where he notes that someday soon you’ll be able to pay a lot of money to watch a first run movie at home while it is still IN the theater. I wonder if Bob Iger and Disney will be the first to touch off that debate as well?
