Disney & Chase Now Offering Premier Visa

Disney and Chase Bank are now offering a new version of their presumably popular Disney themed credit card.  Previously the only offering was the Disney Rewards card.

An overview of the total offering for each card is at disneyrewards.com

The new Premier card comes with a $49 a year fee, earns 2% in rewards dollars on gas, grocery, restaurants, and ‘most’ Disney locations, and 1% on everything else.  This contrasts with the older Rewards card, which is 1% on all purchases with the occasional promotion to earn more.

In addition, if you’re not a Disney passholder, you get a similar package of discount benefits similar (but not the same) as those afforded to passholders.  These include 10% discounts at Disney Store locations and disneystore.com.  Plus a variety of discounts on merchandise and guided tours at Disneyland and Disney World.

One new perk is that on Premier you can now use your Disney Rewards dollars as a statement credit against airline tickets charged to the card.

Both cards offer also offer 0% promo APR’s for 6 billing cycles on Disney reservations.

That’s the good news.

Some of the downsides are (Premier terms) (Rewards terms):

  • like most cards, the if you co-mingle special APR financing and regular APR financing, you have no control over which is paid back first.
  • The new Premier cards have a $49 a year fee that you need to take into account on your usage pattern (you have to spend $4,900 of year on the card, just to recoup the $49 fee and ‘break even’).  The base Rewards card has no fee currently.
  • It comes with a pretty high interest rate at 14.24% variable.  If you pay off every month or better, no issues, but that will cancel the benefits of the 6 month free interest for qualified vacations.
  • Daily interest accrues from the day you make a charge (no grace period for new purchases)

So if you need a credit card, travel to Disney a lot and can make use of the perks, one of these two cards might just help you defray the costs of visiting your favorite Disney places.
